Alzheimer’s disease treatments using omega-3 products were proven ineffective in a research released Tuesday. Outcomes of clinical trials were released showing that omega-3 fatty acid supplements didn’t slow the mental deterioration of Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s rates among individuals with a diet heavy on the fish have shown a reduced occurrence of Alzheimer’s, which prompted the research.

No outcomes from Omega-3

Placebo and Omega-3 fish oil have the same impact. This is what the Journal of the American Medical Association study suggests. The double-blind study randomly assigned subjects with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease to take a daily dose of either an omega-3 fatty acid supplement or a placebo. There were 18 months of patients being monitored. MRI scans of the brains were done at the end of the study period while cognitive ability was assessed too. There was no improvement in brain volume or cognitive ability in either group.

Still looking into link with Alzheimer’s and fish oil

Omega-3 fatty acids became a popular supplement for brain health after studies showing people from cultures with a diet rich in fish tend to suffer Alzheimer’s disease at a lower rate. Though the omega-3 study disproves that notion, it didn’t set out to prove whether fish oil might benefit brain health at a younger age. Studies have suggested that the seeds of dementia are planted decades before symptoms emerge. Taking Omega-3 many years before getting Alzheimer’s could prevent the disease. It may just impede the dementia too.

Experts ought to prepare for negative results

Alzheimer’s therapies are not proven to work at all. This is what a group of experts on cognitive development and decline on the National Institutes of Health said. There are no facts behind any of the programs used. This is why programs like avoiding saturated fats, eating more fruits and vegetables, exercise and memory training do not work. The door is left open a little bit since there isn’t evidence on these things; while Alzheimer’s disease being cured by omega-3 fish oil is something that was proven to be wrong.
